Do you also need RDS CALs?
Standard CALs cover basic server access. If users log in to a full remote desktop session on the server (Remote Desktop Services / Terminal Server), you need an additional RDS CAL on top of the standard CAL – again per user or per device. This is the most commonly missed licence.
How many CALs do I need?
Count everyone (or every device) that connects to the server.
Buy one standard CAL per user or per device.
Add one RDS CAL per user/device for anyone using remote desktop sessions.
Match the CAL year to your server version (e.g. 2022 server → 2022 CALs).
